BOOK ON MALAYSIAN INDIAN DILEMMA TO BE LAUNCHED ON FRIDAY

KUALA LUMPUR, April 29 (Bernama) -- For the first time in the history of Malaysian Indians, a book on their dilemma titled, "The Malaysian Indian Dilemma" will be launched here on May 1.

The 430-page book authored by social activist and freelance writer Janakey Raman Manickam will be launched at Dewan Umarak, Second Residential College, University Malaya at 4pm with a keynote address by University Kebangsaan Malaysia's Institute of Ethnic Studies Founding Director Professor Datuk Dr Shamsul Amri Baharuddin.

The Batang Berjuntai-born Janakey Raman said that it took him 15 years of extensive research before coming out with the book, which mainly focuses on the Malaysian Indian community's socio-economic, history, political and education development in this country.

Janakey Raman said that the book which comes with 212 photographs also indulges into the existence of the Malaysian Indian community since the time of their arrival as indentured labourers about 150 years ago, up till now.

"I have observed the struggles of at least three generations of my fellow Indian brothers. Consequently, I was moved to look further into their psyche and today this book is the child of my pain and sorrow, the fruits of years of research," said the 61-year-old, Janakey Raman.
